Anyway, it's always good to find an interesting web site. All the best. Gerry

Comments about the web site: I think it's just great. My parents are both deceased, and my sister and I wish we had known more about our ancestry and don't know where to start. Our great grandfather was born in Ireland (O'Doherty) and dropped the "O" when he moved to Ottawa where my grandfather George was born & married Anne Stanley and they had only one child, my Dad George Stanley Doherty, then they moved to Thorold, Ontario where I was born. That's all I know. Any idea where I would start. I'd appreciate any advice you have. My father was a World War II veteran and I wish I knew more about that. How sad - when they were alive we weren't interested. Now they're gone, we're getting older and we care, but it's too late. We also believe we have a sibling somewhere in France or England that dad fathered during the war, and would love to find him or her, but that would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

How I found your page: Family History Researching
Comments about the web site: The web site is very well layed out, with some practice novices, like me, should be able to use it and gleen some information from it. Thanks, Bernie Daugherty I have recently found out that my first American Relative was named Charles Dougherty, born 1716 in Valley Lagan, Donegal County, Ireland and was married to a Miss Rebecca Cunningham from County Donegal also. They immigrated to Augusta County, Virginia C1760 and Charles died there C1769. I have a wealth of information on the Dougherty's/Daugherty's/ O'Doherty's however you spelled it in America from 1600's to present date and would be willing to share the information with any person or persons who may be interested or related. A great find would be for me to find morte about Charles and Rebecca nee Cunningham Dougherty and Valley Lagan, Donegal County, Ireland to add to my family history records for future generations of Irish Dougherty's who always liked a good story, a wee bit of drink and a good fist fignt once in awhile. They all still do. Bernie

Comments about the web site: I have been told my whole life that I am "Scottish Presbyterian",my grandfather would become very angery at someone saying Daugherty was Irish. My father had some info of our Scottish background and was invited to a Daugherty Clan reunion in Scotland.I have not been able to find any info on a Daugherty Clan in Scotland and have had many people tell me it is Irish. My name is Dau. not Dou. and my family came here before the French American war so I realy have trouble getting info before that.Do you know anything of why I would have been told I am Scottish with such resolve and not Irish. My family comes from small farm towns in Ohio and now live in Georgia,Atlanta.I know that my great great Grandfather was a deacon in a Presbyterian church and so was my Grandfather. When would this have changed from Irish,Catholic and why, or is there truth to my being Scottish.Any info you may have I would greatly appreciate.Thinking one thing all my life then finding it my not be true is of great trouble to me.I dont know if this helps but the family tree is farmers of pig and cows, blond hair blue eyes and all over 6ft. tall.By the way I have no bad feeling for Irish people that was Grandpaa back and my dad some,I just dont get why if I my have a Irish heritage, that family gets so angery to say we are. Thanks again for any help.Very Sincerly Bobby Daugherty

I have been researching my family history for many years and hope someday to locate the exact place my Dougherty ancestors came from. Since the name is a Donegal one I claim it as his birth place until I find the actual one. I hopw that one of the links in this web site might provide me with some general information and, who knows, maybe the clue I need to locate Michael Dougherty's birthplace.

Comments about the web site: Great Site!!! I have been researching the family name of Doherty. I believe I have traced them to Jefferson county Tn. They proceeded migration to Jacksonville Tx. I believe James to be my G-G-Grandfather , he married Elizabeth Shoemaker. Elizabeth also had a sis named Mary Ann that married a George Doherty. George is believed to be the brother of James. George was born in 1814. I say believe because it has not been confirmed to my satisfaction. If anyone has any history on these Dohertys please contact me. G-Grandfather James Hamilton ( Born in Jacksonville Tx 1851, Grandfather James Edward, Father Leonard Simual. Thanks

How I found your page: Dougherty name search
Comments about the web site: I am so happy to find this site and see all the interest it has generated. My mother was Mary Dougherty, born in Philadelphia around 1920. She was raised in an orphanage. I know she had several sisters (one named Kathryn, a Sissy, a Margaret?) and maybe two brothers, (Thomas? and Horace?). I think her mother was name Margaret, too, perhaps maiden name Hyland (but that could be wrong). I think her father's name was Thomas, but again I could be wrong. There MUST be family members out there somewhere and I would love to find them. Mom died in 1974, before I was old enough to ask all the right questions about her history. If anyone can help me I would be greatly appreciative.

Comments about the web site: Yours is the only site I found that actually provided usefull information on the origins of the surname Dougherty. My great-grandfather was John Joseph Dougherty of Los Angeles, Ca. Beyond him, I am not aware of my family's history. I'm hoping that digging deeper into your site will provide me with information on my lineage.

Comments about the web site: Take a look at http://www3.telus.net/lawson/wills/will_d.html This page is from www.lawsons.ca and shows Isle of Man Wills indexes from 1630. Look at all the variations of Dougherty. The first entries of Dougherty (and variations) appear in the parishes of Jurby and Andreas, Isle of Man, a little earlier than this. Lawson is still adding to his site, and may include these eventually. It would appear that the Doughertys arrived in Isle of Man very early 1600s. I have tried to access the earliest wills which are on microfilm at the Manx Museum Library, but unfortunately, although they are easily accessible, they are difficult to read. I believe my husband's line goes back to this date, although I have only proved to mid 1700s so far. However a general pattern strongly links them, and indeed a local professional genealogist did do the tree some years ago, but does not have a copy of it, but tells me that my family is indeed that line. Needless to say, there are many many 'Dockers' or 'Docs' on the Isle of Man. Spelling is usually Dougherty and Daugherty, and these two families are related. Other spellings occur, but seem to be more recent come-overs. However, only three generations back, all siblings were entered into Catholic records with different spellings. In fact, nothing really changes. We are addressed with many colourful variations, even today! If you follow the links through to A Manx Note Book, and look up the book on American immigrants written around 1950, there are passenger lists given. There are a couple of Doughertys (sp) included. I would be interested to hear from any Alma Dougherty and Fletcher Dougherty. Cheers everybody. Nollick Ghennal

How I found your page: I am beginning to research my family history. My maternal Grandfather was Edward Francis Dougherty, born in Brooklyn, NY. So far, that is pretty much the extent of the infomration I know, with the exception of his Army papers. I found your web site by researching the Dougherty name.
Comments about the web site: Seems like a great site. Any suggestions on how to begin my research would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Janet Whitcomb
