Comments about the web site: My sister and I are trying to find out about our family. Most of our family has passed away so it is kind of hard to find any information. My dad was Billy Dougherty of Marble City OK. His parents were Cyrill(Bill)Dougherty and Dorothy Young. Andrew J. Morris Genealogy -- http://www.genealogy.org/~ajmorris/ Catalog - Ireland - U.S.A. - Global - Surnames - GEDDEX - Photohistory Counties - Irish Chronicles - Research - Reviews - Emigrants - EIREphile - Links -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doherty Doherty can be found in many disguises, as the name is variously rendered Dogherty, Dougherty, Daugherty, Doharty, O'Doherty, etc. The original Irish name was O Dochartaigh, derived from the word docharlach which means destructive. Given the Celtic propensity for belligerence, it was probably bestowed as a name of high honor to a particularly destructive warrior, whose descendants then adopted it as the appellation for the entire clan. MacLysaght notes that members of this family were prone to restore the 'O' prefix to their names during the Gaelic Revival period at the turn of the century. He notes that in 1890, only two percent of the Doherty births registered in Ireland included the 'O' prefix, but by 1955 about half of all Doherty's were using the O'Doherty form. The surname index to Griffith's Valuation shows that the 'O' prefix was rarely used at that time (mid 1800's). A branch of the O'Donnell clan, the O'Doherty's were native to the barony of Raphoe in Donegal, and during the late Middle Ages extended their control over much of Donegal. They lost much of their power and influence after rebelling against the English in 1608, under Sir Cahir O'Dougherty, who was killed in that defeat. Doherty is the 15th most common surname in Ireland. Although it is found in every county, it is still most prominently connected with the traditional land in county Donegal. The surname index to Griffith's Valuation shows that in the 1850's approximately 50% of all citations were in County Donegal, with numbers generally decreasing with distance from that area, so that 72% of all citations were in Ulster, 11% in Connaught and a similar number in Munster, and only 6% in Leinster. Some famous names from this family include the above mentioned Sir Cahir O'Dougherty (1587 - 1608); the sculptor William James O'Doherty (1835 - 1868); writers Thomas Dogherty (d. 1805) and Mary Anne O'Doherty (1826 - 1910); M.P. and later Lord Chief Justice John Doherty (1783 - 1850); and Kevin Izod O'Doherty (1823 - 1905), member of the Young Irelanders, and husband to the above mentioned Mary Anne O'Doherty. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1998 by Andrew J. Comments about the web site: This is an interesting site as it brings us together. I was born in Urris near the Gap-of-Mamore, a mile from leenan bay, my ancestors have the typical names of Devlin, Sharkey,Canny,McLaughlin and McElleny. Most of the s had large families in the last century and so it was the custom for the older children (males) of the family to emigrate usually to the U.S.A. One of the consequences of this break up of the family was that the younger members did not remember their older brothers. In the case of my grandfather one of his brother was fourteen when the youngest brother was born,so if the eldest brother emigrated whnen he was twenty his youngest brother would have only have been six. The majority of my ancestors went to the Boston area in the latter part of the Eighteen hundreds and they all originated from the parish of Clonmany Co Donegal.

Felix came to New York from Ireland around 1850. His parents were Hugh and Mary Dougherty. Felix's Bible says he was from Mount Eley, Ireland. Anyone have any guesses as to where that is, no one has been able to help to date. Would also appreciate any info anyone might have on my family. I hit a dead end with Felix. Know his parents names but not where in Ireland they were from. Felix may have had a brother named Owen. Felix married Rosanna McGahey from County Tyrone after arriving in New York. Comments about the web site: I am descended from a Patrick Dougherty who settled in Southeastern Ohio at the Beginning of the 19th century. I am wondering how we might be connected to the rest of the Doughertys. I am also curious as to how the web site was referenced under Gilboe. My family name is French but I do know that there wer Gilboes in Ireland, as well, probably from the same ancestry because there was an invasion by the Normans where I believe my ancestors came from.

Comments about the web site: My maternal grandfather was a Dougherty from Pennsylvania (Sylvester Dougherty). He died when my mother was young and when my mother also died at a young age, all contact was lost with the family. I do have an uncle I believe still living in Niagra Falls, NY, ironically named Michael Dougherty. I was wondering if you or anyone in your family has heard of a Sylvester Dougherty. All I remember in terms of location is that his wife, Margaret Sughrue lived in Clearfield, PA. This may seem like an odd and random request, but I'm 24 and have no family left. I studied at Trinity College Dublin in college and vacationed in Donegal because I read that was where the Doughertys were from. I'd appreciate any info on the Pennsylvania Doughertys you might have. I grew up in New Hampshire and now reside in Connecticut. I can be reached at my email address above. Thank you!

My father, Thomas Bernard Dougherty was born in Wheeling, W VA in 1921- he is the only child in his generation.
